Since he began practicing medicine in Middle Georgia nearly thirty years ago, Dr. Bill Barnes has been a true friend to athletes. Under his direction, Piedmont Orthopaedic Complex has not only supported athletics in Bibb and surrounding counties, but helped to pioneer some of the most important aspects of sports medicine in this area.

Dr. Barnes was the first orthopedic physician in Middle Georgia to provide Certified Athletic Trainers to nearby schools during the times they need it most, which is often outside of normal business hours. Piedmont has supplied ATC's to football games, soccer games, wrestling matches, basketball games and more, and the purple polos donned by Piedmont ATC's like Heath Mills and Tee Spinks - not to mention Dr. Barnes in his recognizable cowboy hat and boots - are expected fixtures on the sidelines of home football games. Piedmont was also the first orthopedic facility to offer Saturday morning clinics during football season for injured high school football players who couldn't wait until Monday to see a physician. Players can be seen and evaluated by an ATC as well as an orthopedic surgeon (most typically Dr. Barnes himself) free of cost. Dr. Barnes, his colleagues and his staff offer a variety of medical services to athletes, including physicals, exams and rehabilitation. In addition to high school sports, Dr. Barnes has served as team physician for the Macon Whoopees professional hockey team, the Macon Knights AF2 football team, and assisted in treatment of Mercer University athletes. Dr. Barnes and Piedmont Orthopaedic Complex also support adult athletes through various community organizations like Macon Tracks, the John Drew Smith Tennis Center as well as softball leagues. Also inducted into the Macon Sports Hall of Fame in 2014:
  • Danny Minor
  • Earl Bowden
  • Mike Jolly
  • Wanda Burns Jackson
  • Barry Veal
  • Rusty Wynn
  • Walter Daniels
  • Bruce Gordy
You can find more photos from the induction ceremony, as well as photos of the other inductees, on the Piedmont Orthopaedic Complex Facebook Page.
